Mark Ricciuto has opened up on the hilarious story of how he was recruited to the Adelaide Crows.

Arguably the greatest Crow of all time, Ricciuto recalled on his Triple M Adelaide breakfast show this morning the day South Australian football legend Neil Kerley drove to his rural town to watch him play... with an esky full of beers.

"Neil Kerley came up to Waikerie," Roo said, "And I didn't know this, I was in the change rooms getting ready to play."

"I'd just turned 16 and my best mate ran into the change rooms and said 'Neil Kerley's here to watch ya!'

"He'd organised with Dad to save a carpark for him where he parks.

"And Curls rocks up, he's got an esky full of beers, said to Dad: 'Where's the lad playing today?'

"I was playing forward pocket and Curls said, 'I didn't drive all this way to watch him play forward pocket, put him in the middle''.

"So I played forward pocket and they got stuck into the beers, and after I kicked my tenth Curls said to Dad, 'Bring him to down to Adelaide next year, I think he'll be alright."

Roo went on to play 319 games for the Crows, winning a premiership in 1998, three Best and Fairest's, eight All-Australian's and the Brownlow Medal in 2003.
