Barcelona, Spain was the latest scene of global terrorism overnight, as a van deliberately plowed into pedestrians on the busy Las Ramblas strip.

The death toll currently stands at 16 and is likely to climb, with a over 100 more civilians injured.

South Australian woman Susan McLean was in Barcelona and witnessed the horror first hand, and she spoke with Roo and Ditts on Triple M Adelaide this morning to recount her harrowing story.

“I was just off Las Ramblas (the scene of the event).

“All of sudden there was this tidal wave of people just screaming, crying and yelling.

“If you want to imagine, it is the Rundle Mall of Barcelona, obviously a lot bigger and busier.

“It’s full of shops, it’s full of restaurants - and if you can imagine the gates of Adelaide Oval opening after a Test Match and everyone leaving - that’s what it’s like waling down Las Ramblas in August.”

Susan revealed that was able to escape the carnage thanks to the shopkeepers along the busy strip.

“We sheltered in shops,” Susan told Roo and Ditts.

“All the shops along Las Ramblas have steel shutters, and the shop keepers were pulling us inside and then the shutters went down and we stayed there for about half and hour.”

Susan said that although she didn’t see the van itself, the images of the aftermath were horrifying.

“It was horrible.” Susan confirmed.

“We saw all the cars stopped on the street. We could see the police and the ambulances, and here the sirens of course.

“But luckily we did not see the carnage."
