Adelaide's smokers are facing a ban from lighting up along The Parade in Norwood.

Norwood, Payneham & St Peters council will have a meeting next week to vote on the plan to create Adelaide's first smoke free retail strip, wanting to ban smoking on The Parade between Portrush Road and Osmond Terrace, as well as some adjoining side streets.

"The council has decided in principle that we would apply to the minister of health and substance abuse to introduce a ban in that area," City of Norwood, Payneham & St Peters mayor, Robert Bria told Roo & Ditts.

"There's a 21 day consultation period where we'd obviously advise all of the traders and property owners on the parade that's what we're looking at doing.

"We're also looking into introducing a band at Norwood oval - we'll obviously enter into discussions with the Norwood Football Club about that.

"But depending on council's decision, it could take up to six months to implement that bans."

If the smoking ban does come into place along the Norwood parade, Mr Bria said that the ban wouldn't impact licence venues along the street.

"It's (the ban) along the street that this applies," Mr Bria said.

"Within the premises that would have their own set of rules."

If the ban does come into place, the parade would follow suit of other popular Adelaide public areas to introduce bans, with Henley Square, Moseley Square and Rundle Mall all  banning smoking.
