Almost as soon as news broke that Kevin "Kevvie" Walters had quit as the Broncos assistant coach just four weeks in to the season, rumours that a rift with Wayne Bennett was to blame started circulating.

But Walters has strongly denied clashing with the head coach, explaining why he's leaving the Brisbane side in an exclusive chat with The Big Breakfast with Marto, Robin and the Moonman.

"I went down the launch of the State of Origin series - it's in Melbourne this year - and I just want to make sure everything's right for that Series this year," Walters said on Thursday morning.

"I just felt that in the current situation with what I was doing, some people might see me as being a little bit impartial, being a little bit biased maybe.

"That's certainly not the case, around selection time, and I just felt that I needed to give the Origin my full attention."

He continued: "It's totally wrong with saying Wayne and I have had a blow-up or anything like that. That's certainly not the case.

"We've always had a good relationship, regardless of what anyone says."

Walters also spoke about how he'll manage an Origin side without Johnathan Thurston or Cooper Cronk; listen to the full chat below:

You can hear The Big Breakfast with Marto, Robin and the Moonman weekdays from 5.30am in Brisbane on 104.5 or anywhere in Australia on the Triple M app.
