Essendon veteran Brendon Goddard has spoken to Triple M's Tom Browne following Essendon's disappointing showing on Anzac Day.

Goddard received criticism after appearing to speak demonstratively to his teammates throughout the game - and the 32-year old admits he could have expressed himself better.

LISTEN TO GODDARD RESPOND HERE:

"I admit my delivery can come across as poor sometimes, but the context of what I'm saying out there is relative to the game and what we're trying to achieve as a team," Goddard said.

"I know it's an area I need to improve but I don't apologise for the context of what I was saying.

He says that there has never been any fighting with teammates David Zaharakis or Joe Daniher and they all share a strong relationship.

"(The conversation) wasn't directed at Joe - it was directed at the forwards. Trying to get the game back on our terms," he said.

"Joe being the leader of the forward line was the one that I asked to get the guys up."
