Collingwood president Eddie McGuire has raised concerns over last night's decision to suspend Bachar Houli for only 2-matches.

Houli was hit with the ban for knocking out Carlton’s Jed Lamb.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Waleed Aly were used as character references, which appeared to help him escape a more severe penalty.

“This is ridiculous by the tribunal to take this into account. (However) I don’t mind that this was an underlining that Bachar Houli was a really good character,” McGuire said on Triple M’s Hot Breakfast.

“The only thing that comes to me in this is ‘what is his record as a player?’ and it’s unblemished so therefore I believe he should get a discount. Whether that’s 6 to 4 or 5 to 3 or as it’s turned out maybe 4 to 2,” Eddie said.

“My point is this: It should not be taken into account what happens in daily life. It underlines that he is a good character but that should not have been brought into the determination of his penalty.

“Now that we are starting to look at what people do in their private lives in giving a suspension for whats happens on the ground is totally ridiculous and out of control.

“They have been seduced by the names on the bottom of the list. I’m sure.”

“This is a precedent. You can be Mother Teresa, but if you knock someone out on the ground you get 4-weeks.”

The AFL has until midday to lodge an appeal.
