Eddie McGuire has labeled last night’s Mark of the Year decision as ‘embarrassing’.

Essendon’s Joe Daniher was handed the award ahead of Jeremy Howe who took what was widely regarded as the year’s stand out mark.

“I was really disappointed and so was Jeremy Howe,” Eddie said on Triple M’s Hot Breakfast.

“He was probably 1, 2 and 3 and if you want to throw in Brodie Grundy he was probably the next best one.”

“I think the AFL have got to stop the AFL marketing department taking over these major awards.

“Darce and the All Australian team were the ones who came up with the finalists and there is nothing wrong with Joe Daniher’s mark - it was a great mark - but then for it to go to a popular vote i.e.. who has got the most active cheer squad at any one stage.”

Luke Darcy agreed with Ed: “I clearly thought that Jeremy Howe’s mark was the best I’ve seen in maybe 10-years.”

“It was embarrassing last night. I mean you do not do those things,” Eddie said.

“There are things that are sacrosanct in this game. You give the Mark of the Year, mark of the year. You give the Goal of the Year, goal of the year.”

“It left a stain last night.”
