Speaking on Triple M's The Hot Breakfast this morning, Eddie McGuire was discussing tonight's must-win World Cup Qualifier for the Socceroos against UAE.

With only a handful of games to play, Australia finds themselves a game behind second-place on the table and facing the prospect of missing out on the 2018 World Cup completely.

"If we don’t win tonight it is an unmitigated disaster," Eddie said.

"Let’s not kid ourselves."

"If we get done in Sydney by the UAE on the road to the World Cup, this is an absolute disaster for Soccer Australia."

McGuire claimed that while the sport still growing here, a hit like this could cause significant damage to its growth in the country.

"All the money that’s been put into it - we talk about World Cups and all the rest of it - and the A League’s been under a bit of pressure… Big night."

"We’ll win; come on, we’ll fix up the UAE."

"But we better."
