Sam Newman has revealed how be became “stone, motherless broke” following his brilliant 300-game career with Geelong.

Speaking with Mark Howard on The Howie Games, Sam says he was so desperate he was forced to steal food from Channel Seven when he was there for World Of Sport.

A business partner asked him to guarantee a bank loan however when the company went bust, Newman lost $400,000 and his house — and he was forced to stay in the back of mate's shop.

“I’d played football and had a pretty good business and had a pretty good life then all of a sudden I had absolutely nothing,” Newman says.

Sam says a Playboy magazine helped to turn his life around. He was reading the mag when he came across an interview with Cher.

He was “fascinated” by the style and tone of the question-and-answer piece and decided to have a crack at doing the same thing.

Newman conducted an interview with Dermott Brereton, and the rest - as they say - is history.

Two hundred and fifty interviews later Newman had spoken to from Tennis legend John McEnroe to  golfer Greg Norman.
