“To go over there and play West Coast when they’re up and firing is one of the biggest challenges in the game,” Lewis said.

“Just talking to the guys after the game there was certainly that relief that we’ve finally done it, we’ve finally jumped over that hurdle that’s been really hard for us to sort of pass through for the last 12 years.

“You could see the relief on the players’ faces, and sometimes the shackles do come off and you do play with a little bit more freedom and you do challenge these big sides.

“Certainly after the game that was one of the emotions that was flowing around the change rooms.”

Lewis said it was time to keep the team’s eyes on the prize.

“That’s probably the hardest thing, as a leader of the team and as a player that’s been there before is to let them enjoy that moment but also understand that hey, this is the start of it,” he said.

“We’ve got bigger games to play in and bigger things to do in this season.”

Lewis also spoke about the Dees’ game plan, his career and his work in schools.
