Justin Langer was announced this morning as the new Australian cricket coach across all three formats of the game.

The former champion batsman spoke to Triple M's The Hot Breakfast this morning about his excitement for the new role.

LISTEN TO THE INTERVIEW:

"Respect is the number one pillar," Langer said of his coaching philosophy.

"I've always thought respect is worth more than all the gold in the world - we've got to earn our respect back and we'll do that by our behaviours."

Langer replaces Darren Lehmann who stepped down following the sensational ball-tampering scandal - and Luke Darcy asked if the players involved would make their way back.

"Can you see a time where Steve Smith, Cameron Bancroft and David Warner are playing in the same team that you coach?" asked Darcy.

"Yeah, I can," Langer replied.

"These are three really good people in different ways.

"They are cricket tragics - that's why it was such a surprise they got into the situation they did."

Langer also explained how he would go about selecting a new captain for the side.

"I love working with people that are a bit different. Having said that, the captain's crucial," he said.

"Leadership - not just the guys with the title of C or VC next to their name - but leadership throughout the group is going to be important.

"But in terms of a bit of colour, I love the ones that are a bit different."
