Ahead of a night dedicated to Kevin Sheedy's 50th anniversary of being involved in football, the legendary AFL figure spoke to Triple M's The Hot Breakfast this morning.

'50 Years of Sheeds' - as hosted by the Essendon Football Club - will take place tomorrow night.

During his chat, Eddie McGuire asked about his 2000 premiership captain James Hird and if his relationship with Sheeds and the Bombers was in a state of repair.

"For your 50th birthday in football, would you like to see him (Hird) being re-entered into the football family again - and can we draw a line through everything that’s gone on at Essendon over the last few years… Is it time?" Eddie asked.

"I’ve got no doubt about that," Sheedy responded.

"It’s a shame he’s overseas - would have loved to have him along tomorrow night."

The former Bombers coach said that he's had some great chats with Hird recently and their relationship is very strong.

"I think a lot of people forget some of the great things that he had done."

Sheedy referenced some of the adversity Hird went through during his career - specifically, fracturing his skull during a game in WA - and how he managed to return to the game.

He hopes that the supplements scandal of the last few years could be forgiven.

"I think we’ve put that in the past. We’ll just move on now," Sheedy siad.

"Our fan base is really back in - we’ve got 5,000 more members now than ever."

"We’ll get it right - we’ll make him feel as much Essendon as he’s ever felt in his life."

"But it takes time… But we’ll get James right because he’s such a beautiful guy."
