Hawthorn legend Luke Hodge joined The Hot Breakfast ahead of the release of his new autobiography.

The premiership skipper joked about how "the plans had changed" when the book was first planned to be released - following his shock decision to continue playing at the Brisbane Lions in 2018.

After discussing his draft year and his plans for next year, Eddie McGuire asked which game he remembers the most fondly and which 'broke his heart'.

"The best game would have to be the Grand Finals. The 2014 one - there were personal reasons," Hodge said.

"I was able to run through the banner with my two kids because it was my 250th.

"And also the beat Sydney after what they did to us two years prior. And also, Bud (Lance Franklin) went up there that year as well.

"The one that broke my heart was more for a personal reason and what I learnt the most from was about Round 17, 2008 when we played Geelong.

"Geelong were invincible, we could’ve beaten them, and I tried to do too much. I tried to be the hero on the night.

"Clarko (Alastair Clarkson) sat back and said ‘mate, you don’t need to do that.’

"He said to play football on instinct and don’t try to push too hard."
