It's one of the great mysteries from this year's Australian Open.

Surprise American hopeful Tennys Sandgren has made his way into the Quarter Finals of the Grand Slam - but his name is still catching everyone's eye.

His mother Leah joined Triple M's The Hot Breakfast this morning and it didn't take long for the question to come up.

"When you named your little boy 'Tennys', were you eyeing off world domination in the sport?" Luke Darcy asked.

"No, not at all!" Leah responded.

"It's his great-grandfather's name and we were very hesitant to do it.

"My husband was a tennis pro - we are a tennis-playing family and there was no doubt that Tennys was going to play at some level.

"We kind of considered the fact that this could become a handicap for him down the road.

"But still, it was a family name and we decided to bite the bullet and name him Tennys after his great-grandfather."

The original Tennys Sandgren emigrated to the United States from Sweden.
