Adelaide star Rory Sloane has paid tribute to Curtly Hampton and his character, telling Triple M's Rush Hour with Jars and Louie he's "a pretty special human".

LISTEN TO SLOANE:

Hampton announced his immediate retirement from the game on Wednesday, saying he'd lost his passion to compete at the top level.

Sloane told Jars and Louie it was a shame Hampton had lost the love for the game, saying he was "burnt out".

"He's someone I worked really close with over the last couple of years in particular," he told Triple M.

"There's only so much the body and mind can take, eventually, before it does too much. It's a pretty tough sport, football, and you've got to be able to commit yourself 100 per cent."

He praised Hampton's character, saying he'll go on to do great things outside football.

"I've got so much love for that man," he explained.

"I've learnt more from him in that area (Indigenous culture) than I have in 18 years of schooling. He's a pretty special human."
