Former Hawthorn champ Sam Mitchell has told Triple M's Rush Hour with Jars and Louie the story of how he nearly backed out on the Hawks in 2011.

MITCHELL'S STORY:

Mitchell is releasing his autobiography, Relentless, detailing his star-studded career at Hawthorn and West Coast, and joined Triple M Adelaide on Wednesday to talk about it.

During the chat, Jars asked him about the section in the book where he details the showdown with Alastair Clarkson that nearly forced him out of the club.

"It's hard in a radio interview to really explain!" he laughed.

"We had twins that year, and I also had a son. When my twins were born, my son was not quite one...there wasn't a lot of sleep going on."

After losing the preliminary final "by a kick", Mitchell explained the conflict that nearly forced him out before winning three more flags.

"One of us needed to change," he explained.
