Former Australian cricketer Adam Gilchrist has said Cricket Australia had no other choice than to uphold the bans handed down following the ball tampering incident.

Despite repeated comments in the media urging Cricket Australia to overturn the bans handed down and allow the trio to play Shield cricket for their respective states; the governing body announced today the bans would be upheld.

A decision, which legendary wicketkeeper/batsman Adam Gilchrist told Jars and Louie on Triple M Adelaide this afternoon, wasn't a surprising one.

"I'm not surprised," Gilly said.

"I think, at the end of the day, the feeling is that it'd be seen as panicking on the back of some poor performances to rush them back into form of cricket.

"The argument to let them play Shield cricket; there's benefit for many people around them.

"To learn from them, to garner that experience of having them around.

"But for me fundamentally, there was a punishment handed down... and they've just got to stick it out I think."

Steve Smith's and David Warner's bans are set to end on March 29 next year, while Cameron Bancroft will be available for selection at the end of next month on December 29.
