Triple M's Hot Breakfast footy reporter Tom Browne has explained what caused emotions to flare during the Carlton/Essendon clash, saying it was a family sledge from Essendon's Mark Baguley to Carlton's Jed Lamb.

LISTEN TO BROWNE EXPLAIN:

Emotions spilled at three quarter time between Carlton and Essendon, with even coach Brendon Bolton involved, who was filmed mouthing off at Baguley.

Browne explained on Triple M's Rush Hour it was all caused by a sledge from Baguley to Lamb that crossed the line.

Lamb copped a fine from the match review officer for striking during the clash.

"It explains Brendon Bolton, why he blew up at three quarter time on the weekend," he said.

"Baguley, I don't think, knew that at the time and repeatedly sledged Lamb.

"Lamb said 'mate, hold up here, my dad's in fact passed away'."
