Wayne Carey says Geelong can absolutely contend for the premiership next season, as long as they do one more thing right.

DUCK EXPLAINS:

The Cats crashed out in an elimination final last Friday at the hands of the Demons, which prompted conversations about where the club was at and whether they should go again or look towards the draft.

Duck, who joined Triple M's Rush Hour on Tuesday, leaned towards the former, saying they can't be written off.

"I don't think that they're completely broken," he said.

"I think they do have to look at the way they play.

"They've got some superstars, I think they've got a pretty good list.

"I don't think they're that far away."

Carey said Geelong's success in 2019 will pend on what they can get out of potential recruits, such as Luke Dahlhaus, Gary Rohan and Jack Steven, all of whom have been linked to the club.

He pointed to Richmond's recent recruits as an example.

"Funnily enough, (Josh) Caddy was at Geelong, but if they could get a Caddy and a (Toby) Nankervis and a (Dion) Prestia in one go and then they come in and have an immediate impact like those three did, they elevate themselves straight into a premiership contender, I think," he said.
