Damian Barrett says there are two clubs in Melbourne who have asked the question about trading for Gold Coast captain Steven May.

BARRETT'S NEWS:

May is contracted until the end of 2019 and is not a free agent.

However, Barrett says the Suns are "open" to shipping him off if he cannot commit to the club beyond that timeframe.

"We've been talking about him for three or four months now," he told Triple M's Saturday Rub.

"He's very much open to coming to Melbourne to continuing his career."

Barrett said the suggestion the Suns could do with a leader to help them rebuild like May wouldn't play into it.

"They're open to it (Gold Coast), and I don't care what they say publicly," he said.

"If he cannot commit to them beyond that contract he's got, they will happily move him this year.

"There's a bidding war for him behind the scenes. It's yet to ramp up totally because they're yet to get the go button on it, but clubs are poised and ready to go down the path."
