Wayne Carey has responded to criticism from Geelong coach Chris Scott, sticking by what he originally said about where Ablett should play.

LISTEN TO DUCK:

Scott laughed that Carey didn't like the talk of Ablett being referred to as the best player of all time.

Carey didn't agree.

“Let’s be honest: if I was going to run a smear campaign, it would have been against the great Leigh Matthews down there or maybe Gary’s dad, if I was trying to do that!" he said on the Saturday Rub.

Carey explained his Ablett talk was purely constructive.

“I said that Geelong are better off without Gary in their midfield. He’s got to play forward," he said.

"He takes time off guys like Duncan and others that go through that area. He’s not as defensive as he once was, he doesn’t penetrate with his kicking.

"I think he’d be better value to the team, given that they have had struggles kicking goals...sitting up in that forward and getting maybe 20 possessions and three goals a week."
