A local footy team in Melbourne’s north-east pulled off one of the most remarkable grand final comebacks you’ll hear of today.

Lower Plenty were playing off against Eltham in the Northern Football League’s division two grand final at Preston City Oval today, and looked in all sorts when they were trailing at three quarter time having not kicked a goal.

Eltham were unable to put the Bears away, however, wasting chances to lead 2.10 (22) to 0.3 (3) at the last change in wet conditions.

Lower were within striking distance and came hard in the last term, dragging the scores level at 2.10 (22).

Extra time looked on the cards with the two teams were locked in an arm wrestle for around the last eight minutes, until Lower’s Ben Paterson booted a goal almost as the siren went (no one at the ground was sober enough to confirm reports that Paterson had kicked all three in the last term).

Watch the winning goal on the live stream here — it happens with roughly 23 minutes left.

Pandemonium ensued, with Lower fans heading on to the ground to celebrate with their mates.

The scenes in the rooms were sensational too:

It’s the Bears’ third senior premiership in the competition (formerly known as the Diamond Valley Football League) after division two triumphs in 1999 and 2011.

Fair to say the north-eastern suburbs of Melbourne will see a party tonight!

Wayne Carey has labelled the contact below the knees rule a “disgrace”.
