Melbourne midfielder Aaron vandenBerg has resisted a move home to New South Wales, signing a contract extension with the Demons.

VandenBerg, who was linked to Sydney to be closer to his family, today signed a three-year extension at Melbourne, keeping him in red and blue until the end of 2021.

"We are very happy that Aaron has decided to remain a Melbourne player and agreed to a new deal,” general manager of football operations Josh Mahoney told Melbourne Media.

“The last two years have been very challenging personally and we understand that this was a tough decision for Aaron, given his family situation and the attraction of moving to Sydney.

“It is a positive reflection of our club and the environment that has been created for the players, and the connection they have together.”

The 26-year-old returned from a long-term series of heel and ankle injuries to return in time for Melbourne's finals series, playing the final seven games.

He averaged 16 disposals, five inside 50s and kicked five goals in those games.
