Adelaide midfielder Hugh Greenwood will have a delayed start to pre-season after undergoing foot surgery on Monday.

The basketballer-cum-footballer reported soreness in his Achilles and after consultation with a specialist it was decided that going under the knife was the best course of action.

Adelaide high performance manager Matt Hass said Greenwood would be reassessed after Christmas.

“Hugh was experiencing some soreness around his Achilles towards the back end of last season and it hadn’t improved over the holiday period,” Hass said.

“After further investigation, there was some irritation in an area adjacent to his Achilles and it was decided surgery was the best option for him.

“He will recover from the surgery over the next few weeks and build up to full training in the new year.”

The 25-year-old had a dream debut 2017 season in which he played 15 games, including the grand final against Richmond.

It capped off an incredible transition in his professional sporting career after he left the NBL’s Perth Wildcats to join the Crows in 2015.
