The AFL have announced that the 2018 grand final will be staged during the day rather than at twilight, resisting the urge to break with over 120 years of tradition in the process.

There have been 122 grand finals played in the VFL/AFL’s 122-season history, including three replays, and they have all been played during the day.

There was strong speculation that last year’s premiership decider between Richmond and Adelaide may very well have been the last ever daytime affair.

But the long-mooted twilight grand final has been put on the back-burner for another 12 months at least.

"I thought going into the (commission) meeting the decision could have gone either way," AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan said.

"But on balance, everyone was very comfortable to keep it (a day grand final).

"There will be a lot of people happy to keep it where it is.

"I'm sure there will be a change (at some stage)."
