The AFL has ticked off the controversial third man up free kick awarded late in the third quarter of last night's Good Friday clash between North Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs.

Josh Dunkley was awarded a free kick for the Bulldogs after nominating for the ruck contest and being infringed on.

Replays, however, suggested teammate Marcus Bontempelli had nominated first, drawing plenty of ire from North Melbourne players and footy fans alike.

The match audio confirms Dunkley was the first to say he had nominated for the ruck, according to the umpire.

"He'd already nominated," the umpire said.

Marcus Bontempelli admitted the confusion after the match.

"I actually didn't see that Josh had nominated," Bontempelli said post-game.
