Sydney superstar Lance Franklin is free to face St Kilda on Saturday after he was cleared of striking by the match review panel.

Franklin drew the attention of the MRP after making contact with North Melbourne youngster Sam Durdin on Sunday at Etihad Stadium.

But Franklin’s action was deemed to be done with an open hand and that it wasn’t a striking motion. It was decided that the free kick paid at the time was punishment enough.

Meanwhile, $1000 fines were handed out to Hawthorn speedster Isaac Smith, Brisbane forward Eric Hipwood, Melbourne midfielder Bernie Vince and Richmond captain Trent Cotchin.

Smith was sanctioned for striking the Lions’ Nick Robertson, Hipwood was offered his fine for striking Smith, Vince can accept his fine for making careless contact with an umpire while Cotchin was penalised for striking Fremantle star Lachie Neale.

The AFL has also written to St Kilda, Carlton, North Melbourne and Sydney with regards to sanctions concerning the melees they were involved in on the weekend.

The clubs have a right to respond in writing before a final penalty is set.

And Geelong midfielder Cam Guthrie was cleared of making contact with an umpire on Saturday night against Essendon. The MRP deemed the contact to not be unreasonable.
