AFLPA general manager of player relations Brett Murphy has slammed the "disrespect" shown to GWS star Toby Greene on Friday night.

The Giants are investigating an incident after the game against the Bulldogs, where Greene had beer poured on him by a Bulldogs fan.

Murphy expressed his disappointment.

"Buying a ticket to the footy does not grant fans the right to show such disrespect to the players," he told News Corp on Saturday.

"The close proximity of players to fans is one of the great aspects of our game, and incidents like this threaten to ruin it for everyone.

"We have got full confidence that the AFL and Etihad Stadium will take appropriate action."

Teammate Dylan Shiel relayed those thoughts earlier on Saturday.

"No one likes to see that. It's not a good look for the sport when that's happening to the athletes," he told Fox Sports.

"We're playing our game, we want to be safe and to entertain the crowd.

"To hear that that happened is disappointing. Like I said, I was made aware of it, (but) I'm not sure of the full extent of it."
