After extraordinary attendances and TV ratings to start the season, the AFL may be considering moving the AFLW grand final to the MCG.

As reported by the Herald Sun, the AFL is considering holding the grand final at the MCG on March 25, setting up a double header with the hotly anticipated round one fixture between Essendon and Hawthorn.

AFL general manager of game and market development Simon Lethlean said on Saturday said the AFL has options for the fixture, but the prospect of an MCG double header was enticing.

“We’ve got two or three options to consider,” he said yesterday.

“I don’t think we want to host a game where we will be turning people away, so obviously the MCG is open on the Saturday afternoon. We have Essendon and Hawthorn on that night. The women’s game is slated for 1pm or 2pm, so there is a three-hour window where the game could be played (at the same venue).”

Both fixtures would be expected to pull significant crowds, with AFLW crowds more than doubling expectations and Essendon welcoming back their suspended players against rivals Hawthorn.

AFL Fans Association president Gerry Eeman backed the possibility of the AFLW grand final being posted at either Etihad Stadium or the MCG.

"If it can get Etihad or the MCG that’s a great outcome," he told News Corp.

"I think it would be great if it (the women’s league) stood firmly and proudly on its own.”

Etihad Stadium looks unlikely for an AFLW grand final, with St Kilda/Melbourne currently slated for a twilight fixture on the day.
