Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson has flattened suggestions the club could trade away any of its star players to rejuvenate their list, including forward Jack Gunston.

Gunston addressed trade talk on Friday, saying he is taking the positives out of his name being mooted at the trade trade.

"In football, I guess you never know," he told afl.com.au.

"I'd love to stay at this club and I always want to stay at this club, but I guess the good thing is people see value in me and that's the reason they're talking, so I'll take the positives out of it."

But Clarkson put a dent in the trade talk on Friday.

"Listen, these guys are contracted players," he said.

"Those guys who have played anywhere from 100 to 200 games are critical for the next wave of players for your footy club (with) their leadership.

"It's those guys that need to carry our club forward, so we'd be pretty loathe to lose any of those guys. It's been mooted in the press about Gunston and (Paul) Puopolo and others and they're the last guys we want to see leaving the footy club.

"They're all contracted, anyway, so I think it would be highly, highly unlikely that those guys would be moving away from the club."
