Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson has said boom recruit Jaeger O'Meara has bone bruising in his knee, and he will "hopefully" play next week.

O'Meara copped a knock to the same knee that saw him miss two years of footy against Gold Coast in round three.

Clarkson said the injury just hasn't settled as hoped.

"He's got bone bruising in his knee," he revealed on Saturday.

"He had a knock against Gold Coast that we thought was going to settle pretty quickly, but with bone bruising it could be one week or it could be four.

"We were hoping, certainly with the way that he responded in the first couple of days was positive, so we thought (he's) even a chance to play the next week, but as it's turned out, he's going to miss his second game.

Clarkson said the club has their fingers crossed he would play next Saturday against St Kilda.

"We're hopeful he'll be right for next week, but we were hopeful he was going to be right for last week and it wasn't to be the case," he said.

"He's not too far away."

He played down suggestions the injury was related to his previous knee issues.

"Aside from the fact it's the same knee he's had patella trouble with, that's the other thing that makes it the same," he said.

"Hopefully he'll be right next week."
