Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson has taken a subtle dig at the umpires following their loss to Gold Coast.

The Hawks were dealt a blow when Kaiden Brand cost them a 50-metre penalty in the last quarter for infringing on the protected zone of a Ben Ainsworth set shot.

Ainsworth missed the kick, but the 50 was paid, gifting him a kick from straight in front and a crucial goal.

Clarkson had a little dig in his post-match presser.

"I'm not allowed to comment on disgraceful umpiring, so I'm better off not saying anything," he laughed.

"I don't know what it (the Kaiden Brand decision) was for."

Clarkson admitted the result didn't hinge on the umpiring, but suggested the Hawks were hard done by.

"We don't lose the game because of the umps," he said.

"But there's a few dubious decisions over the course of the game...you've just got to take the swings and roundabouts.

"Unfortunately we hit a few roadblocks in that regard today."
