Port Adelaide assistant coach Matty Nicks has confirmed Chad Wingard will miss two to three weeks with an ankle sprain, but is hopeful he won't miss any longer.

Wingard hurt his ankle during the third term against Melbourne.

He tried returning to the game at the start of the last quarter, but was eventually put on ice.

Nicks confirmed the extent of the injury on Dead Set Legends Adelaide.

“Chad’s an interesting one,” he said on Triple M.

“At this point he’s probably one of those two to three week (injuries). It’s a high ankle sprain. We watched the replay back…he had the weight on it and got rolled inwards."

Wingard was spotted on crutches after the game.

Nicks was hopeful it would only be a short stint on the sidelines.

“Fingers crossed that it’s nothing major, that it’s maybe a couple of weeks,"  he said.

"Definitely, we’ll lose him for a few."
