Carlton captain Marc Murphy has decided against leaving the Blues, instead agreeing to a new two-year contract with the struggling club.

Murphy will now remain at Visy Park until the end of 2020 at least, meaning the former No.1 draft pick’s career will extend to a 15th season.

There had been speculation that the 30-year-old was considering a move to a rival club at the end of this year, but he has now quashed those suggestions by putting pen to paper.

“Ultimately, it was an easy decision to put pen to paper on this new deal with the club,” Murphy said.

“I wanted to make a decision in the best interests of my young family. I am the captain of the football club, I love this place, my teammates and I’m more determined than ever to get this club back to where we belong.

“I know the direction that this young playing list is heading and that’s what drives me every day. I want to continue to get the most out of this group by driving the standards of myself and others to ensure there is success in the coming years.”

Since debuting in 2006, Murphy has played 241 games for the Blues, ranking him 17th all-time at the club. If he stays fit and healthy for the duration of the next two-and-a-half seasons, he could move to sixth.

Murphy is a two-time best-and-fairest winner, one-time All-Australian, one-time AFLCA Champion Player of the Year and has captained the Blues for the last six seasons.
