Hawthorn triple premiership full back Brian Lake is reportedly in a Japanese jail after a bar fight, according to the Herald Sun.

Lake was in Osaka playing in an AFL tournament and was involved in a scuffle while out celebrating a win with the Indonesian Volcanoes.

Lake was there with former Essendon player Rick Olarenshaw, who is part of the group working to get him out.

Lake could be held for up to 23 days without charge by the Japanese authorities.

Sources close to Lake believe he did not throw a punch in the altercation.

The 36-year-old had previously been filming Australian Survivor for Channel 10 before going to Bali and linking up with Olarenshaw.

The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed to the Herald Sun that they were assisting an Australian in Japan.

“The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is making inquiries about an Australian in Japan who may require consular assistance and stands ready to provide assistance, in accordance with the Consular Services Charter, should it be requested,” DFAT said.

“Owing to our privacy obligations we will not provide further comment.”
