Triple M Footy’s Brian Taylor has defended his adulation of Cyril Rioli during Channel Seven’s coverage of the Hawthorn-Geelong Easter Monday blockbuster at the MCG.

BT came in for criticism, notably from Kane Cornes, for hyping up Rioli’s performance against the Cats, even though the 2015 Norm Smith Medalist only had seven disposals.

Damian Barrett and Billy Brownless put it to BT that his call may have been “over the top”.

However, BT was having none of it and stood by his reverence of Rioli.

“You can go over the top with accolades of a four-time premiership player can you?,” BT posed on Triple M’s Rush Hour during The Midweek Rub

Damo asked: “He (Rioli) didn’t get it a lot though, did he?”

To which BT responded with: “So what? You know Leigh Matthews, who has a statue at the MCG, he actually said that this guy had contributed today a significant amount of work.

“That’s how Cyril plays, that’s how all Riolis play and that’s how I want him to play. He doesn’t need a lot of the ball.

“He did three knockdowns to put it in the path of other players. No stat involved in that – as good as a handball, as good as a handball.”
