Brisbane's general manager of football David Noble says he'll speak to the AFL about reviewing or resetting the free agency compensation, and that his club is "really frustrated".

Noble, whose club lost Tom Rockliff to free agency this trade period, described the current system as "secret herbs and spices".

"The compensation pick that's evolved with Trengove, Motlop and Rockliff just does not add up," he told AFL Trade Radio.

"We’re really frustrated, we’re going to talk to the AFL. I know Greg Swann’s coming down tomorrow. We’re going to go in there and talk.

"It is secret herbs and spices, isn’t it? I do sit on the player advisory group and I understand that free agency is not full compensation, compared to when the new franchises came in, we get that.

"But it still doesn’t equate. We don’t believe that there’s enough mechanisms  or enough levels in there that give you the understanding."

Noble suggested having compensation not attached to where you finish on the the ladder.

"I’ve always felt a mid-first round pick is palatable for everyone. So the Franklin, the Frawley, the Rockliff. If there was pick 10 (as compensation), for example," he said.

"I’ve never understood the fact the team almost lucks in to a position where you finish on the ladder and so therefore if you lose a free agent in that year it’s attached to where you finish on the ladder.

"So Hawthorn lost their best player and got pick 18. Melbourne looked like it got some help because it ended up for them, it was good compensation.

"I’ve always thought that pick nine, ten band is palatable for everyone. Then you have end-of-first round, second, end-of-second, third. We’re going to put that on the table and see whether or not those bandings can actually be reset or reviewed through the AFL system."
