Brian Taylor has said Richmond is closer to a premiership than Melbourne.

The two teams are set to clash on Anzac Eve on Monday night, with a big crowd expected.

With Melbourne having a younger list, but Richmond having a better record, JB quizzed BT on who was closest to a flag.

"Out of those two? I would say Richmond," he said on Triple M.

"I know you'll say the young guys at Melbourne and all that sort of thing...I reckon Richmond have got a team that can win the grand final this year or next year, whereas Melbourne haven't.

BT admitted he likely wouldn't have said that four weeks ago.

"I probably wouldn't have said that at the start of the year, but since I've seen all those things that we just spoke about," he said.

"We didn't know about (Jason) Castagna, (Dan) Butler, all of these guys, we didn't know any of that.

"We didn't know how (Dion) Prestia was going to go. We didn't know whether (Josh) Caddy was a good buy or not. But all of these things have added up to a positive for Richmond.

"All of a sudden they are a better team than they were last year. And they are a better team than Melbourne."
