Retiring Carlton veteran Dennis Armfield wants to see the AFL make a major change to the way the home-and-away season is structured.

Armfield told Triple M’s Rush Hour that he would like to see the ’17-5’ model implemented where every team plays each other once before the competition splits into three groups of six.

The top six play for the top six finals spots, the middle six play for the final two finals spots and the bottom six could then play for prime positioning in the national draft.

“That way you get rid of tanking speculation and then you can see who’s really striving to finish the year strong,” Armfield said.

However, the 144-gamer doesn’t believe the regular season drags on for too long.

“I think sometimes pre-season’s too long. When you have pre-season that’s longer than your season that’s a bit weird,” he said.

“But the season is good fun and now that it (his career) is over, playing 23 rounds and 22 games a year, I’d love to do it again.”

Armfield is hoping for a farewell match against the Swans in Sydney this week, but won’t begrudge coach Brendon Bolton if he opts to play a youngster at the SCG instead of the 30-year-old.

“I’ve said to him (do) whatever he thinks is best for Carlton and if that’s the youth, we’ll do that. If that’s me, well I’ll love that as well,” he said.
