Carlton has been given a suspended fine of $20,000 for their handling of Cam Polson during last week’s match against Collingwood.

Polson copped a head knock in the first quarter of the game, and the AFL sought explanation as to why he wasn’t removed permanently from the ground as per the concussion rules.

The fine is suspended until the end of 2020.

The league said the fine was "in relation to the assessment and management of player Cam Polson during last week’s round 14 match against Collingwood at the MCG

The AFL explained their decision in a press release:

After receiving a written explanation from the club, speaking to club staff and examining match day vision, it was the AFL view Carlton had breached AFL Regulations, with the $20,000 suspended sanction to be in place until the end of the 2020 season.

Mr (Steve) Hocking (head of football operations at the AFL) said the AFL had determined the club had breached AFL Regulations on on the basis:

  • The Carlton FC Medical Officer failed to note/misinterpreted the video signs of concussion contained in the AFL Match Head Injury Assessment Form.
  • The Carlton FC Medical Officer failed to permanently remove player Polson for the remainder of the match as directed by the AFL Match Head Injury Assessment Form.

Damian Barrett said that the decision may inform the AFL’s decision on Sydney bringing Isaac Heeney back on to the ground against Richmond last night, despite him suffering from concussion symptoms.
