It's no secret that Carlton need experienced players.

And it's being reported by the Age that they're in the hunt for out-of-contract Sydney defender Nic Newman.

Newman fits the mould of player the Blues want, having played 31 games since debuting in 2017.

He'll turn 26 before the start of the 2019 season.

Carlton have not contacted Sydney, but have contacted Newman's representatives saying they'd be open to picking him up as a delisted free agent when the delisted free agency period opens on November 1.

However, Sydney have asked Newman if he'd be open to staying at the club, after missing out on Collingwood's Darcy Moore and Tom Langdon.

Earlier in the trade period, the Swans were open to a straight swap of Newman for North's Ryan Clarke.
