Carlton has become the first team to pick a father/daughter recruit in today’s AFLW draft, with Abbie McKay going to the club with pick 16.

Abbie is the daughter of 1995 premiership player Andrew McKay, who played 244 games for the club between 1993 and 2003.

To qualify as a father/daughter pick, the father needs to have played at least one game for the club.

Abbie has previously played for the Blues in the VFLW, kicking a goal and being named amongst the best on debut against Essendon.

The midfielder — who turns 18 in November — has been picked due to her footy rather than her story, according to Blues AFLW coach Daniel Harford.

“While this is a wonderful story and proud moment for the Club, we selected Abbie because we see a smart footballer who will greatly contribute to our women’s program,” Harford said.

“Playing in the exhibition match at Adelaide Oval and being invited to participate in the AFLW combine indicates to me that she’s a quality player, and we look forward to the McKay name continuing on at Carlton.”

As well as the 95 flag, Andrew McKay was a four time All-Australian, won a best and fairest for the Blues in 2003 and was inducted into the South Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2007.

McKay also served as General Manager of Football Operations at Carlton between 2011 and 2018.

As was widely tipped, Geelong took local Nina Morrison at pick 1 in the draft.
