Champion Data has predicted that Carlton star Patrick Cripps won’t finish in the top 20 of the Brownlow Medal, according to Jay Clark in the Herald Sun.

Cripps broke the record for contested possessions in a home and away season, but the master statisticians say that will translate to just 12 votes — enough for a 29th place finish.

Less surprisingly, Champion Data are backing Hawthorn’s Tom Mitchell to win the Charlie — they say he’ll pick up 29 votes, leading Dustin Martin and star Cat Patrick Dangerfield on 28 and 23 votes respectively.

Andrew Gaff is set for a top four finish according to Champion Data with 22 votes, despite being suspended for the last three matches.

Meanwhile, Max Gawn (18 votes) is set to win the much hyped battle of the ruckmen, knocking off Brodie Grundy with 17.

CHAMPION DATA’S TOP 10:

1. Tom Mitchell (Hawthorn) 29

2. Dustin Martin (Richmond) 28

3. Patrick Dangerfield (Geelong) 23

4. Andrew Gaff (ineligible — WC) 22

=5. Clayton Oliver (Melbourne) 19

=5. Dyson Heppell (Essendon) 19

=7. Max Gawn (Melbourne) 18

=7. Jackson Macrae (WB) 18

=9. Stephen Coniglio (GWS) 17

=9. Brodie Grundy (Collingwood) 17

Wayne Carey has labelled the contact below the knees rule a “disgrace”.
