The state of footy has been a big talking point so far this season, with a commission set up to look into it.

But it turns out the conversation has been going for at least 35 years.

Senior Editor at Slattery Media and former sports journo Russell Jackson turned up an article written by Mike Sheahan in 1983 bemoaning the state of the game even back then.

Titled “What’s wrong with footy?”, the article focuses on Sheahan’s son no longer wanting to follow Collingwood because of player movement.

“Football isn’t what it used to be,” Sheahan writes.

“I guess that nothing is, but tradition and identity are so important to this game.”

So it turns out the current discussion continues a long tradition.

Essendon assistant coach James Kelly says that Joe Daniher is a “fair way off” playing footy.
