Brisbane coach Chris Fagan remains optimistic young gun Josh Schache will remain at the club beyond 2017.

Fagan joined Triple M's Neroli Meadows on Fox Sports' AFL Today and said he was confident of retaining the 20-year-old, but admitted if Schache is homesick it might be "very difficult" to stop.

He said Schache was due to return to the club on Monday, after being given a break for his own wellbeing.

"He's due back at the club tomorrow," he said on Sunday.

"It sounds like he's in good spirits. I think the break here at home has done him a world of good. Hopefully when he comes back tomorrow he's a happier chap than he was when he came home.

"I think it's important to look after the wellbeing of your players. He's been under a lot of pressure, and we thought the best thing for him was to have a break away from the club and playing, and we think that's been a good call."

Fagan remained hopeful Schache would stay at the club.

"I'm very hopeful that he'll stay," he said.

"He might be incredibly homesick. That's spmething that's very difficult to stop, if that's what's happening. I know we've done everything as a club to help him, and I know he knows that.

"I've still got a strong level of optimism that he'll stay with us."

Fagan did say, though, that Schache may not finish out the year if he tells the Lions he's leaving mid-season.

"I guess if a guy decides he's going to leave your footy club and he's not going to help you into the future and you're not in the finals race, you'll probably have to think twice about getting games into him as opposed to another young player who's going to stay at the club," he said.

"I think that's our scenario."
