Chris Judd has ranked Geelong superstar Patrick Dangerfield as the best player in the competition, but admits Richmond's Dustin Martin is catching right up.

Speaking on Triple M's Rush Hour, JB queried Juddy on who he currently ranked as the best midfielder in the league.

"Look, right today I'd probably go with Patrick Dangerfield," he said.

"Dustin Martin's getting close."

Judd said it was their ability to break games open by foot that set Dangerfield and Martin ahead of the rest.

"(It's) just because of their ability to kick the ball and just be so damaging by foot," he said.

"That just seems to have such a huge bearing on games."

JB noted a few potential standouts in the Brownlow Medal so far, including Dangerfield, Martin, Nat Fyfe, Rory Sloane, Marcus Bontempelli and Ollie Wines.

And, unlike Judd, he didn't rank Dangerfield on top of that list.

"I am an unabridged card-carrying member of the Nat Fyfe being the best player in the comp card, myself," he said.

"But that's only my ranking."

Judd said he'd be stoked with any of them playing for his side.

"You mentioned any of those six guys, Nat Fyfe included, you'd be rapt if any of them would be wearing your jumper," he said.
