Brisbane Lions Category B Rookie Cian Hanley has decided to return home to Ireland.

The 21-year-old has had a challenging last 12 months, with his younger brother Tommy passing away in Dublin after a cancer battle in March last year.

“The club has been unbelievable, I’m very appreciative of what they’ve done over the last while,” Hanley told the Brisbane website.

“It’s no fault of theirs I’m going home.

“It’s just more me and personal reasons and I just think it’s the right time to go.”

Hanley came to the Lions with pick 56 in the 2014 rookie draft, and didn’t manage a senior game.

Hanley’s older brother, Pearce, also played for the Lions before moving to the Gold Coast in the 2016 off-season.
