Tough-as-nails Bulldog Clay Smith has opened up on the effect missing the first three games of the year had on him.

Smith was instrumental in the Dogs preliminary final win over GWS and played in the flag win against Sydney the next week, but found himself out of the team at the start of this season.

Smith said it was a hard pill to swallow.

“Yeah, that was tough,” he said

“I didn’t find out until a couple of days before, he’s come up and sort of gave me the tap on the shoulder and had a word to me.

“We just had a lot of players back and fit.

“Murph (Bob Murphy) was back, Suckers (Matt Suckling), all our half backs were up and running and then we obviously Clokey (Travis Cloke) and Stuey Crameri come back and they wanted to go with some height and see how that was gonna work out with the boys.”

Smith said he was a victim of the Dogs’ depth.

“It was unfortunate and he said he didn’t want to, but that’s the way it goes, I guess, when you have a good side coming off the back of a premiership,” he said.

“It’s a healthy thing for the club, but you never want to be on the receiving end of being dropped, that’s for sure.”
