The Giants could be bolstered by the return of veteran Ryan Griffen for their semi final against either Port Adelaide or West Coast next week, as well as fellow veteran Steve Johnson.

Griffen made a successful return in the club's scratch match against Adelaide's SANFL side on Friday, with assistant coach Brad Miller saying he is "in the frame" for an AFL return.

"His whole preparation over the past five or six weeks has been to put his hand up for finals," he told reporters after the match.

"The way that he broke tackles early I thought was pretty important - that's him at his best."

Griffen has not played a game since round three, with the 31-year-old succumbing to a serious ankle injury.

Miller said Griffen's availability all depended on how he pulled up.

"He's got himself back and he's given himself a chance, so he's absolutely in the frame," he said.

"We'll have to see how he pulls up from this game...that will be the key."

Steve Johnson is also in the mix to return after being omitted for the Adelaide clash, after impressing in the scratch match.

"(His knee) has been an issue all year but I think he was moving fairly freely today," Miller said.

"I thought he put his hand up (for selection), for sure."
