With Garry Lyon’s recent move from Channel 9 to Fox Footy, Monday night stalwart Footy Classified will need a replacement.
Triple M’s Damian Barrett performed the role during Lyon's hiatus in 2016, and is considered the natural replacement in some cricles.
However Hutchy and Damo agreed on their podcast the Sounding Board that for balance, another journalist is not the way to go.
“I think the mix of two ex-players and two media identities — leaving aside who they are — is the best ensemble mix of those four,” Hutchy said.
“The way you’re looking at it it’ll be another ex-player?” Damo asked.
“There’s a good chance it will be,” Hutchy said.
“You (Barrett) would be fantastic if you did it.
“[But] I do question whether the 3-1 journo versus ex-player is the right model for the show.”
Damo agreed and said that he wasn’t even that interested in the role.
“If I was asked, I would have a look at it,” he said.
“But I’m with you, I think the show — which I love as much or more than any other footy show — I think three journos is too many.”
“If you were asked to do it, you’d have to do it,” Hutchy said.
“Well of course you would,” Damo said.
“I haven’t been asked yet.
“Is that giving away a trade secret? I haven’t been asked.”
Hutchy run through some of the bookies favourites.
“You’re $4 favourite on sportsbet, which is a good price,” Hutchy said.
“Wayne Carey $7, James Brayshaw $12, (James) Hird $16, Jake Niall $21, (Jason) Dunstall $21, (Chris) Judd $21, Ed (McGuire) $21, Pickers (Liam Pickering) gets a run at $34 — think we can rule that out — and Grant Thomas at $51.”
Damo thought that it’s possible none of those names will fill the chair though.
“Is it possible the replacement is not actually on that list?” he asked.
“Very possible,” Hutchy replied.
“Highly likely that person is not on the list?” Damo pushed.
“It’s possible,” Hutchy said.
